Descriptions Psychological Components of Sustainable Peace

Scholarship on the psychology of peace has been accumulating for decades. The approach employed has been predominantly centered on addressing and preventing conflict and violence and less on the conditions associated with promoting peace. Concerns around nuclear annihilation, enemy images, discrimination, denial of basic human needs, terrorism and torture have been the focal points of most research. The Psychological Components of a Sustainable Peace moves beyond a prevention-orientation to the study of the conditions for increasing the probabilities for sustainable, cooperative peace. Such a view combines preventative scholarship with a promotive-orientation to the study of peaceful situations and societies. The contributors to this volume examine the components of various psychological theories that contribute to the promotion of a harmonious, sustainable peace. Underlying this orientation is the belief that promoting the ideas and actions which can lead to a sustainable, harmonious peace will not only contribute to the prevention of war, but will also lead to more positive, constructive relations among people and nations and to a more sustainable planet. The Psychological Components of a Sustainable Peace is valuable and stimulating reading for researchers in peace psychology, political psychology, and conflict resolution as well as others who are interested in developing a sustainable, harmonious world.

Psychological components of sustainable peace: An introduction - William James, the first peace psychologist, was a most distinguished scholar and also an insistent public voice on issues of war and peace. He was deeply opposed to imperialism and the war fever with which it was associated. For James, the appeal of war and the military did not come primarily from people's negative predispositions, but from their desire to face challenge and adversity and in so doing, to realize their potentials in such virtues as fidelity, cohesiveness, tenacity, and heroism. In his famous paper, The Moral Equivalent of War, he sought to articulate how the manly virtues associated with the military and war could find expression in the midst of a pacific civilization and thus be a moral substitute for war. This book takes a different orientation than that of James and much of psychological writings related to issues of war and peace. Their focus has mainly been on what psychological theory and research can contribute to the very important concern, the prevention of war. This book is concerne

Psychological components of sustainable peace - In contrast to the abundant research on conflict, aggression and violence, there are few scholars today conducting basic research oriented to the fundamental conditions and processes for sustainable peace. This alternative orientation to scholarship and practice parallels the shift that has occurred more generally in psychology over recent decades from a focus on problems toward solutions (known as positive psychology). Underlying this orientation is the belief that promoting the ideas and actions which can lead to a sustainable, harmonious peace will not only contribute to the prevention of war, but will also lead to more positive, constructive relations among people and nations and to a more sustainable planet. Psychological Components of Sustainable Peace shares how ideas emerging from psychological theory and research can contribute to the development of sustainable peace at all levels of human interaction, from the interpersonal to the international.
