Descriptions Decolonial Enactments in Community Psychology

This edited volume in the Community Psychology Book Series emphasizes applications of community psychology for disrupting dominant and hegemonic power relations. The book explores domains of work that are located within critical community psychology, as well as work that is conventionally not self-defined as community psychology but which draws on and contributes to the foundations and enactments of critical and liberatory community psychology. Specifically, the book advances conceptions and praxes for community psychology grounded within a decolonial framework. The volume heeds the call for a generation of approaches to community psychology that link local struggles to broader questions of power, identity, and knowledge production, bringing together examples of praxes from different contexts as a political project of highlighting indigenous struggles toward self-determination. Collectively, the chapters in this book embody a decolonial agenda for community psychology that foregrounds social justice; the lives and knowledges of the marginalized and oppressed; epistemic disobedience and transdisciplinarity; and decolonial aesthetics. The book is divided into two parts - Part I: Conceptions of Engagement for Community Psychology delves into the conceptual framework for a decolonial community psychology, and Part II: Modes of Enactments and Praxes for Community Psychology builds on these theoretical advancements through examples of praxis in different contexts. The audience for the book includes scholars, researchers, practitioners, activists, and students located within community psychology specifically, as well as disciplines within the health and social sciences, and arts and humanities more broadly.

Decentering “community” in community psychology: Towards radical relationality and resistance - In this chapter, I interrogate the metanarrative of “community” in the field of community psychology using a decolonial lens. My goal is to render transparent ontological assumptions, epistemic standpoints, and the inherent legacies that inform the ways in which community is conceptualised, how community psychologists construct their professional role vis-à-vis communities, and the implications for the social reproduction of colonial, racialised, and gendered hierarchies. Rather than approaching community as an object of inquiry, I argue that a decolonial community psychology needs to reframe its relational engagement to communities. In other words, I propose that we shift the (colonial) gaze from community as object-of-inquiry to focus on mutuality, reciprocity, justice, and ethics. Such a stance disrupts the assumed knowability of oppressed or disenfranchised groups and denaturalises the role of research as one of many possible avenues for action. Drawing upon the work of indigenous, decolonial, and tr

Reflections on radical love and rebellion: Towards decolonial solidarity in community psychology praxis - In this chapter, the author shares stories, questions, and insights into decolonial love and solidarity as critical to the building of communities of resistance against colonialism and coloniality. The author reviews Global South perspectives on solidarity and decolonial feminist theories on radical love. Furthermore, the author shares examples from his qualitative research projects and community psychology praxis in three different locations (refugee camp communities in Palestine, Mapuche Indigenous communities in Chile, and communities of color in Boston USA). These three different research sites are also distinct homespaces for the author. The author attempts at sharing examples from his research projects across these three different homespaces in a way that also includes his sharing of personal reflections and embracing the complexities that follow. As a white, Latinx, and Arab American cis-gender man working within a Global North academic institution, a critical component for the author, in his writing a
